She/her

Hello! I am glad you are looking into what you might need in order to meet the challenges you are facing.  I hope I can give you information that will help you choose a provider that is a good fit for you.  It can be tough to know what will be best so please ask for a brief phone call if that would help you decide if I am the right provider for your needs.  I am happy to share a little about who I am to help you.  I am a White mother, raising three biracial/bicultural children (White and Japanese American).  My time within a biracial/bicultural family has made me more attuned to the incredible importance and ongoing effort of cultural responsiveness and humility. I am certainly still learning as a parent and wish I could be better at it given how much education and research I have behind me in child development and parenting!  It is not an easy job, and I am very compassionate to that reality. In my free time, I am a Trekkie and love all things related to space. I love to read, build things (like puzzles, Legos, veggie gardens, or room decor), crafting, being outdoors, watching movies and being with my family.

In all aspects of my life, I am a highly personable, highly curious, warm, and “real” person.  Previous clients have described me as very knowledgeable, “down to earth,” and straightforward.  My main goal is to help people and their loved ones see themselves and each other with more compassion and to learn to understand and appreciate the beautifully complex individuals we all are.  Often that comes through in my concerted effort to explain the “whys” behind behavior whenever I can and in my effort to help you understand the context that influences which version of yourself comes through at any given moment.  Most of us are trying our best and working to recover from various wounds in our pasts at the same time.

I work with individuals aged 6-99+, couples, and families.  I specialize in attachment theory, relationships, trauma, adoption/foster care, Giftedness/2e, anxiety, therapeutic assessment and parenting support.  I have a special love of working with mothers at any stage of motherhood including from the moment a mom decides that “mother” is a role they are working to have as part of their identity.

I adapt my therapeutic style to meet each client’s needs, but I often include humor, metaphor, drawings, writing, occasional psychological testing and education into my sessions as appropriate.  Although I pull from all therapeutic modalities that I encounter, due to my deep love of learning, I practice most regularly using these modalities: Relationship-based, psychodynamic, trauma-informed, developmental pathways, systems, resilience focused, cognitive-behavioral therapy, Therapeutic Assessment and non-directive play therapy.

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing if working together makes sense for you in your life right now! You can reach me at dr.tsuchiya@vaydamentalhealth.com or 612-712-7476
